Emperor Dagran Thaurissan by pulyx Emperor Dagran Thaurissan by pulyx
What's up fellas,

Seems like i gots my mojo back! (Yeah baby!)
Third good piece in 3 weeks. Seems like i'm heading in the right direction. Kicking bad old habits (lines. ugh. fuck lines)

This is a piece i've been postponing FOREVEEER. Because i never found a design i liked. So i came up with this one.
Anyone who played vanilla WoW will "remember" (in quotes because he doesn't look like this at all ingame) him for being the Final boss of Black rock Depths.
This is Dagran Thaurissan, king of Dark Iron dwarves. I always loved Dark Iron dwarves. Rogue badasses. It's too bad he was developed during a time where WoWs graphics were primitive and they hadn't started making tons of awesome custom models for the bosses/NPCs (like The new Garrosh and Thrall models for an example).

So i felt this guy, who fathered the Heir to the Dark Iron AND Bronzebeard kingdoms should get a proper, royal treatment.
Of course he was a DICK for casting a "love" spell on Magni's daughter. It makes for good lore though.
And i thought this guy should look badass. He shouldn't be so weak as he is ingame. They should develop him more. But he's water under the bridge.
Still, i always wanted to flesh him out. Plus, i've said it before, dwarves are my favorite fantasy race and i always feel like i'm neglecting them terribly.

To my future comissioners, this is what can be done when you think outside the box! (Looky, he's donning the Crown of Destruction!)

It would be remiss of me forgetting to mention the death stare is TOTALLY inspired by the man, Ron Swanson.

Hope you guys like it.
Dunno how many hours. Some 16 hours maybe ?

Also, thanks to :iconphillgonzo: for some pro art direction.

"To my future commissioners, this is what can be done when you think outside the box!" SQUEE!  I'm torn on Moira, in the books they make her look manipulative, but in game she's portrayed as humble and looking out for the good of all the dwarves. As for your Emperor Dagran Thaurissan I love how you draw dwarves,  the spikes in the beard are the best.

Hey Pulyx, If I recall correctly it's on the Wolfheart novel where they show her introduction into Ironforge.

Farmed this SOB for my Hand of Justice back in Burning Crusade when it stacked with Sword Spec.  The hours of lava hopping were made worth it when I got a sword spec > HoJ > Sword Spec proc string one time in a battleground and absolutely -decimated- a mage.

One of my fonder memories of the game for sure.  Thanks for bringing me back!

Oh my god, yeah.  It's so big, there was a raid dungeon inside it.  As impractical as that was, I kind of miss the sheer awe-inspiring size of it.  The dungeons now are just so linear and "wham-bam-done".  A lot of the wonder and interest of exploring a place that wasn't designed for you to finish it quickly has been lost, for me anyways.

I love the Dark Iron dwarves. Don't get me wrong, I love dwarves in general but the Dark Irons brought the A-game when it came to nega-dwarves. They had a great liking to sorcery, particularly darkness and fire (which is a good fit for people that live in volcanoes of course) along with flame elementals and the techno-magic of golems to field. Whereas other dwarves would march straight into enemy lines, Dark Iron dwarves prefer setting up ambushes, or sending lightning fast strikes and are not above petty tricks such as traps, assassination, and just plain retreating when things don't work out.

When i look at Blackrock mountain i have to concede that when they set out to shame the other clans in building the greatest city they succeed. Though it was always humorous to me that it has been occupied by several foreign forces for several decades, yet the dark irons technically never left and paradoxically controlled and expanded territory outside the confines of their centralized location. Eesh, it would be like britain trying to to build an empire while half of london was still being occupied by a defeated french army that was STILL attacking them after thirty years.

For a good while the was an item called Dire Brew from the Grim Guzzler which turned you into one for a whole hour. Needless to say with the Direbrew Remote I made a point of perpetually being a dark iron, added challenge of not dying since most of my time was spent in pvp (i'm glad to say i can't remember failing but that's a  boastful story for another day). Anyway, with Dark Irons now truly apart of the Alliance, i hope to see the skin option if they ever get around to that fabled graphic update of old races.

Well, there are "light" dark iron dwarves in the game since the get go. Just not the ones influenced by the Firelord. (They have pale, grayish skin, red eyes).
But the ones in the thick of it in Thaurissan got "JUICED" on fire and look extra evil.
I didn't play cataclysm enough to know what end Ragnaros got. Dead for good now ?
That would change a lot of stuff. Since he was the main evil force that took the dark irons over the edge of sanity. Before that i figure they were just a insurgent people, figured they deserved more props.

With his death in his home dimension, Ragnaros is as dead as dead can get (in fact this unprecedented change in the elemental statuas quo may chaos even further chaos, but the cure couldn't be worse than the sickness at that point right?). The destruction of Twilight's Hammer leaves the Dark Irons of Ironforge the only real power left beyond the scant and select members of the thorium brotherhood. Relations were bit...rough to say the least, but the pandarian conflict gave Moira's faction the chance they needed to prove themselves trust worthy. I think they add the right amount of grit to dwarves, indeed the alliance as whole, perhaps something they tried to accomplish with the worgen.

But did he ACTUALLY cast a love spell on her, or did he provide an ear to listen and a shoulder to lean on. it all depends on the revisions to the lore. I like the idea he and Moira actually had a connection and it wasn't just a spell because if her son was also a Shaman, maybe receiving Wildhammer training, it would be a really cool unification of all three of the clans.

The piece is really amazing, I'm digging the more painterly approach you're using now, no sharp black lines around everything, just a melding of colors like how things actually appear to the human eye.

And the runes on his beard and braids is really cool.

Heheh that's why i said this story needed to be more fleshed out. The questline just ended abruptly. A shame.
I remember in the quest texts, Magni sayin' he cast a spell on her. But it could be she just wanted to spite dad. (Daddy issues)

Hope Blizzard makes a Dwarf centric book someday. God damn elf centric books. ALL of them..

Glad you liked it.
